Principal Areas of Work
Personal Injury (Including Clinical Negligence & Industrial Disease): The personal injury practice is underpinned by an ethos focused on the health and wellbeing of a client, not simply on their financial remedy. It encourages best practice particularly in terms of accessing rehabilitation, promoting the beneficial impact of early access to treatment on improved clinical outcomes for clients. The PI practice is regularly in the media dealing with high-profile serious injury cases ranging from spinal/brain injuries to asbestos related cases. High-profile cases include the Savile inquiry litigation. The Savile team has been an instrumental voice for victims of abuse, campaigning for changes in the law e.g. mandatory reporting. The firm continues to conduct group actions including BT deafness claims (representing hundreds of engineers); De Puy hip claims; Thalidomide claims; food poisoning outbreaks and is heavily involved in the PIP implant claims. The firm also has one of the most successful clinical negligence teams in the country, with specialist expertise in cosmetic surgery, orthopaedic and hospital/GP negligence cases. The firm’s prominence in asbestos litigation results largely from its long experience in the field, having represented thousands of asbestos disease sufferers over a period of almost 30 years.
Employment: This department is widely recognised as one of the UK’s leading employment teams for claimants and has a reputation for helping to shape the employment law landscape through its work on landmark cases. Its practice is focused on empowering individuals in the workplace by protecting their rights and the rights of those who represent them. From trade union work through to high-value city, senior executive and partnership cases, the employment team offers a complete independent, excellent-value employment service to all workers.
Family Law: The Family Department is one of the largest in the country, offering a diverse range of services covering divorce and separation, pre-nuptial agreements, financial disputes, children matters, civil partnerships and cohabitation matters. The team also offers mediation and collaborative law services, as well as offering specialist advice in relation to children matters, ranging from contact and residence disputes to adoption and international child abduction.
Crime & Misconduct: The firm provides a nationwide service advising and representing clients facing criminal and professional misconduct investigations and proceedings. It’s experienced in employment-related criminal investigations and unrivalled in its involvement in high-profile criminal investigations and proceedings. The team has substantial experience in representing individuals in criminal investigations arising from their employment, ranging from work-related deaths and Health & Safety investigations to road traffic matters.
Business Crime & Regulation: Pre-eminent in this field, the team has significant experience of investigations and prosecutions in company compliance, FCA, health and safety, corporate manslaughter, extradition, international investigations, money laundering, price fixing, fraud, cartels and confiscation. It was involved in the ground-breaking settlement with the SFO in the first use of civil recovery powers rather than criminal prosecution, heralded as a template for future corporate enforcement actions.
Professional Discipline & Regulation: The team has significant experience in advising both regulators and individual professionals on matters of regulation, professional discipline and fitness to practice across a range of industry sectors.
Media, Libel & Privacy: The practice handles large-scale, complex and high-profile litigation and is dedicated to protecting reputations and restoring them when they are damaged. This practice is highly respected by other firms and the leading barristers’ chambers in the fields of defamation and privacy, as well as within the media. The team is well-known as the firm of choice for the members and head offices of many trade unions and membership organisations. However, it also acts for a wide range of private clients including well-known individuals such as leading businessman, Peter Cruddas, and bodies such as Carmarthenshire County Council.
Group Litigation & Commercial Services: The practice is widely identified as a leader in the field of major multi party litigation and has conducted major and complex claims in product liability (including medical devices, pharmaceuticals and defective goods), provision of negligent financial advice, mis-selling and other market abuses, employment rights and pensions and annuity mis-selling, breach of consumer rights and personal injury.
Cases of note include: The interest rate hedging litigation where the firm acted for over 350 businesses, coordinating the pressure group “Bully Banks”; a solicitor negligence case on behalf of 150 clients in relation to an equity release scheme; the practice is acting for a large group of investors in a claim involving the mis-selling of investments in a company called Green Oil Plantations Limited. The firm also represented victims of the anti-morning sickness drug Thalidomide administered in the 1950s/60s and are also representing victims of the Mau Mau uprising in Kenya in the 1950’s.
Other offices: London, Manchester, Liverpool, Birmingham, Sheffield, Milton Keynes, Bristol, Cambridge, Cardiff, Edinburgh, Halifax, Newcastle, Wakefield and Derby.
